Elaine & Matthew who started up Cuthbert’s Bakehouse in Liverpool nearly four years ago, featured in an episode of Heston’s Great British Food devoted to afternoon tea.
The couple were chosen to appear after being approached by the show’s makers, Channel 4, after researchers wanted people to feature who lived and breathed afternoon tea and have the opportunity to try Heston’s Great British Afternoon tea menu. The pair had to wear vintage clothes with lace and floral designs and we had to taste various elements of an afternoon tea.
There were a few surprises which the couple were not allowed to talk about until the programme was shown on the 22nd May. One of the highlights of the day for the couple was receiving the ‘golden ticket’ to take part in the show.
Heston gave the classic British afternoon tea a few very special twists, conjuring something the Mad Hatter himself would be proud of.
Creations included Heston’s very own take on the Victoria sandwich cake. Inspired by a visit to Wedgwood fine china manufacturers, an edible cake stand out of sponge and some ‘sandwich’ cakes that look like smoked salmon and cream cheese, but are in fact sweet cakes made from Earl Grey sponge and blood orange pâté de fruit.
For tea, Heston brewed up a Darjeeling and hedgerow infusion and cucumber sandwich tea leaves.
The star of the show had to be the sandwich casino, featured inside a beautiful country house in Staffordshire, where the guests were able to eat the playing cards, casino chips and even the gambling table.
And the last surprise, a chocolate teapot that poured Earl Grey chocolate tea, with chocolate cups and saucers to accompany.
It was great to be served afternoon tea rather than serving!. The Bakehouse specialise in afternoon tea’s served daily in their Bakehouse.
